Get moving or I’ll introduce a bill.
Sometimes it takes a bill to get people to move. Often bills are introduced in order to get a branch of gov. or an agency to move. Case in point is Sen. Lautenbaugh’s bill to expand deer hunting provisions. Nebraskans, both rural AND urban are realizing the devastating effect of the overpopulation of deer in our State. Farmers are being hit hard with crop loss and you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t had a car/deer collision in the last 5 years. It might be coincidental, but right after Sen. Lautenbaugh’s bill (LB 836) the Game & Parks division announced plans to allow for expanded deer hunting. (see attached article). It is not uncommon for us as legislators to introduce a bill so two agencies will work together. The message is: You two work it out or Ill work it out for you. If it sounds like a parent scolding their two fighting kids, you’re right. Unfortunately, to get two opposing groups to come together, we have to threaten our own solution. Sen. Lautenbaugh may have been doing just that. We’ll see where the bill goes. My preference is to let the Game & Parks do their job. They are capable. Perhaps LB 836 was the spur they needed to get it done.
